ANN ALBERS
For much of the past 15 years, I have been a sculptor and a ceramicist. My work is concentrated on figurative sculptures and functional ceramics. Many of my pieces are human figures, often female. As a Brazilian artist, my work often emphasizes the beauty of unique ethnic traits. By exploring the natural properties of this art media I create sculptures using a combination of hand-building techniques and wheel throwing techniques. When possible I work with stoneware, especially speckled clay leaving it unglazed or partially glazed for a raw earthy feel that circles me back to nature.
My first contact with this art media was when I was 10 years old and I remember being fascinated by the plasticity of the material and the fact that such a soft malleable material would drastically change its nature once fired. Later in life when I was a young Graphic Designer, for self-healing purposes, I was drawn back to it and while discovering the infinite ways you can work with clay I finally found the language I was longing to express myself.
Clay allowed me to find myself by giving me the means to reconnect with my culture and my femininity. I use a small number of tools with the use of a sponge, a slab roller (or hand roller), a needle tool, a metal rib, and a throwing wheel I’m able to create my art pieces. I can also use carving tools to create interesting patterns and details. Exploring every step of working with clay, from its early soft stages to the final bisque and glazed fired I try to create something beautiful and express my personal aesthetic of natural beauty.
